We were very happy to have Sandvik and the Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant (part of Vattenfall) visiting SÄKU for a focus meeting where they presented their work on KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that relates to health and safety within their different companies and domains.
The Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant
The Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant (part of Vattenfall) has just started their journey in using proactive KPIs with regard to health and safety. Cecilia Lindmark is a key player in the KPI design and implementation work. She has been working as an industrial safety engineer for 15 years and at Forsmark plant since 2012. Her work includes assignments to develop the Health & Safety-management system and strategic support to management team concerning Health & Safety.
Cecilia talked about how you can design a KPI that really shows you what’s really going on.
Can we really use a KPI to encapsulate a tree of important success factors, or does it only make it more difficult to monitor safety improvements?
Cecilia's questions that were discussed in the focus groups after the presentations (these can be discussed at "home" with members from your own organisation) were:
1. What reflection and thoughts did you get related to Forsmarks presentation?
2. If we have one (1) position in our company scorecard to show proactive work environment (safety and health) – Is an “indicator tree” a practical idea?

Sandvik has worked with KPIs in relation to health and safety for many years and has also been globally awarded for this. Stuart Evans, Head of EHS for Sandvik Group, gave a presentation of Sandvik’s “KPI journey”.
Stuart resides in Perth, Australia and has worked 40 years within the field of EHS across several industries and countries, with the focus on working with KPIs in the last 20 years. He also have had recent experience more with Management Systems and Culture Change at Sandvik.
Stuart's focus in his presentation was on how KPIs within the Sandvik Group started with little and inconsistent collection of EHS data and only ad-hoc ‘local’ setting of KPIs using spreadsheets. And then how this progressed to the use of database based processes that focus on both leading and lagging indicators of performance and the use of KPIs to help drive culture change.
Stuart's questions that were discussed in the focus groups after the presentations (these can be discussed at "home" with members from your own organisation) were:
1. Design some KPIs that will take your company to the ‘next level’ of EHS Performance.
Instruction: If the ‘typical’ Breakout Group member situation is they are only using basic lagging indicators, then think of ‘semi-lagging’ indicators – if the Group feels they are already using good ‘semi-lagging’ indictors, then develop some Leading Indicators
2. Compare the advantages / barriers / difficulties of trying to set lagging, semi-lagging and leading indicators of EHS performance that can be used for benchmarking within:
A. A medium size company with no or limited diversity (in products or services offered).
B. A larger / more diverse company
C. An Industry Forum Group

This summer the American regulator OHSAS (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) published a handbook/guideline of how to develop leading indicators called “Using Leading Indicators to Improve Safety and Health Outcomes”.
